Australian PM: Asylum-Seekers Will Not Be Resettled Here

Any asylum seeker arriving in Australia by boat without a visa will be barred from resettlement there as a refugee, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has announced.

Flanked by Immigration Minister Tony Burke and Papua New Guinea (PNG) Prime Minister Peter O’Neill, Rudd declared that such asylum seekers "will never be settled in Australia" and will instead be relocated to Papua New Guinea, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Rudd said there would be no cap on the number of refugees transferred to Papua New Guinea. In exchange for the PNG’s agreement to accept refugees arriving in Australia, Canberra would help out with redevelopment of a referral hospital and reforms to the country’s university sector.

Political observers said Rudd’s new policy was the strongest stance ever taken by a Labor Party prime minister against people smugglers.

"Australians have had enough of seeing people drowning in the waters to our north," Rudd said. "Our country has had enough of people smugglers exploiting asylum seekers and seeing them . . . drown on the high seas."

Opposition Conservative Party leader Tony Abbott welcomed the decision but expressed skepticism that the policy could work under Rudd and Labor.

Refugee advocates questioned Rudd’s decision, with a spokeswoman for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre saying the Prime Minister was "outsourcing" Australia’s obligations under international refugee law.
