Catholic Priest Burned in Zanzibar Acid Attack

By    |   Monday, 16 Sep 2013 12:09 PM

In another indication that religious tensions are mounting on Zanzibar, a Roman Catholic priest has been burned in an acid attack.

The victim, Father Joseph Anselmo Mwagambwa, is being treated for his injuries in a local hospital. He was leaving an internet cafe in Zanzibar City’s Stone Town section Friday afternoon when one or more assailants threw acid on him, London’s Express newspaper reported Monday.

"He sustained burns in his face and shoulders. The acid burnt through his shirt," Zanzibar police spokesman Mohamed Mhina said. “

The acid also injured Father Mwagambwa’s chest, thighs, and legs.

The New York Times reported that Friday’s attack was the third attack on a clergy member on the Indian Ocean island in the past year.

In February, a Catholic priest was shot to death. Last year, another priest was shot and wounded on Zanzibar, a Tanzanian island where Muslims comprise a majority of the population. There have also been several arson attacks on Catholic churches there.

Last year, a moderate Muslim cleric suffered burns in an acid attack, the Times reported.

Last month, two British teenagers, Katie Gee and Kirstie Trup, were victims of an acid attack while volunteering in Zanzibar. Doctors believe that their attackers used sulphuric acid from a car battery. It is thought that the girls will need skin grafts.

No arrests have been made in Friday’s attack. Officials have offered an award of approximately $6,000 for information leading to arrest of the perpetrators.
