Kenya, Somalia Sign Refugee Reparation Accord

By    |   Tuesday, 12 Nov 2013 05:49 AM

More than half a million Somali refugees in Kenya will be given the opportunity for voluntary repatriation home over the next three years under an agreement signed with the United Nations by those countries, according to the BBC.

The refugees fled to Somalia after the fall of longtime president Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991 and the collapse of the nation’s central government.

The U.N. Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said refugees would decide whether they wanted to go to Somalia.

In Mogadishu, Somalian Deputy Prime Minister Fowsia Yusuf Adam said the country was prepared for the refugees’ safe return, the BBC reported..

“The federal republic of Somalia is committed to creating conditions that will allow for the safe and dignified voluntary repatriation of the Somali refugees in Kenya and other neighboring countries," she said.

Kenyan Deputy President William Ruto said Kenya is fully committed to a strong, functioning Somalia, Midnimo.com reported.

“Its citizens are our very own brothers and sisters who deserve a tranquil home to go to, settle and prosper in,” he said.

But, at the same time, the size of the Somali refugee population in Kenya has created huge problems for Kenya, with criminals and jihadists using their refugee status to take advantage of Kenya’s hospitality, he said.
