Nigeria Needs Shelter for Riot Displaced

LAGOS – A Geneva-based housing rights group on Thursday urged Nigerian authorities to provide "adequate emergency shelter" for thousands of people displaced by deadly violence in the central city of Jos.

"Those displaced as a result of the recent violence ... must be provided with adequate emergency shelter while efforts begin to provide a permanent solution to their housing problems," the Centre on Housing Rights and Evictions (COHRE) said.

More than 20,000 people have been displaced as a result of the religious and ethnic violence that claimed at least 300 lives in the city of Jos and its environs last week.

Estimates from medical and aid workers and religious and community leaders have put the toll from the recent bloodshed at more than 550.

COHRE, in a statement, called on the government "to ensure safe and dignified conditions for people to return to their homes and land, and also begin a process for immediate compensation for those who lost homes and property."

The rights group said that the government had the right to ask the international community for any assistance it may require to meet its obligations to the displaced.

"Emergency shelter must include access to clean water and adequate sanitation. But efforts to rebuild livelihoods must begin as a matter of urgency so that the people of Jos can return to normality as soon as possible," COHRE Executive Director Salih Booker said in the statement, received here.

The people displaced by the four-day violence are in camps in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, and in neighbouring states.
