Nigeria Authorities Continue Hunt for Kidnapped Archbishop

By    |   Monday, 09 Sep 2013 08:51 AM

Police continue to search for the dean of the Nigerian Anglican Church, Archbishop Ignatius Kattey, who was kidnapped late Friday along with his wife Beatrice near their residence in Port Harcourt.

His wife was released unharmed several hours later, but whereabouts of Kattey, Nigeria’s second most senior Anglican archbishop, remain unknown.

Authorities said the kidnappers abandoned Mrs. Kattey while being chased by Nigerian police, the Nigeria Guardian reported.

Church members told The Guardian they are praying for the archbishop’s victim’s unconditional release and would not think of paying any ransom.

Kidnapping for ransom has become commonplace in the oil-rich Niger Delta region around Port Harcourt in recent years, according to the BBC.

Last year, the mother of Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was kidnapped and held for five days.
