Kenyan Woman Denies Testifying at Trial; Fears for Life

A Kenyan woman says she fears for her life after being wrongly identified as a prosecution witness in the International Criminal Court (ICC) trial of Deputy President William Ruto.

Rahab Muthoni — reportedly a resident of Eldoret, Ruto's home town — has denied that she is the witness who testified against Ruto in The Hague on Tuesday. She requested police protection after her photo was circulated on social media, according to the BBC.

Ruto is charged with crimes against humanity over the violence which followed Kenya’s December 2007 elections. An estimated 1,200 people died and 600,000 were forced from their homes by the riots.

ICC chief prosecutor Fatou Bensouda has previously complained that witnesses are being intimidated, leading some of them to withdraw from the case.

On Wednesday, ICC judge Chile Eboe-Osuji warned that anybody threatening or revealing the identity of witnesses would face prosecution.

The first witness at The Hague gave evidence from behind a curtain and with her face pixilated and voice distorted on the court video.

She is being referred to as witness 536.

Witness 536 broke down in court during her testimony on Tuesday as she described the Jan. 1, 2008, attack on the Kiambaa Church in Eldoret in which an estimated 36 people were burnt to death.

She described how members of Ruto’s Kalenjin tribe, armed with axes, sticks, and machetes, approached the church — which was packed with women and children from her Kikuyu ethnic group — and set it afire, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Prosecutors claim the massacre occurred at Ruto's behest. Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta faces trial on similar charges in November.
