Imam Investigated in Acid Attack Reported Shot by Tanzanian Police

Tanzanian Muslim leaders have called for an independent inquiry into the reported shooting of militant Muslim cleric Sheikh Ponda Issa Ponda on Saturday during an attempted arrest.

Police sources told the London Telegraph that that Ponda is being investigated in connection with Wednesday night’s acid attack on two 18-year-old British women, Katie Gee and Kirstie Trup, in Zanzibar. The women were volunteering at an orphanage on the Indian Ocean island.

Tanzanian authorities said Ponda had visited Zanzibar in the weeks leading up to the attack, and that he had met earlier this month with the imprisoned leaders of the Muslim separatist group, Uamsho, who may have inspired the attack.

In May, Ponda received a one-year suspended sentence for a prior incident in which his supporters vandalized and torched five churches in Dar es-Salaam, the capital. The rioting followed rumors that a Christian boy had urinated on a Koran.

A senior police officer in Morogoro, a city 120 miles west of Dar es-Salaam, said Ponda “was shot by our officers” who tried to arrest him Saturday on charges of inciting violence.

The cleric’s supporters began throwing stones, and in response, police fired shots into the air to in an effort to disperse the crowds, a police spokeswoman said.

Ponda fled the area but was later captured by police.

He is currently under armed guard while being treated for his injuries at Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es-Salaam, the capital, the London Daily Mirror reported.

The acid attack victims were flown back to Britain Friday for medical treatment, and Trup was released from the hospital on Sunday. She will return Thursday to undergo skin grafts.
