Charles Taylor Will Serve War-Crimes Sentence in Britain

British Justice Minister Jeremy Wright has confirmed that former Liberian President Charles Taylor will serve his 50-year sentence for war crimes in Britain, the BBC reported Thursday.

Judges at the Special Court for Sierra Leone, meeting in The Hague, convicted Taylor last year of crimes that included murder, rape, terrorism, and the military conscription of children in neighboring Sierra Leone during an 11-year war that ended in 2002.

Appellate judges last month upheld Taylor’s May 2012 conviction and sentence, Reuters reported Sept. 26.

Taylor, the first head of state convicted by an international war-crimes tribunal since World War II, was convicted of supplying weapons to the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebels in exchange for so-called “blood diamonds.”

More than 90 witnesses testified that child soldiers under Taylor’s command were forced to ingest marijuana and amphetamines before going into battle.

Taylor, who was indicted in 2003, was arrested in March 2006 while in exile in Nigeria. He was transferred to The Hague three months later.

Wright has not said when Taylor will be transferred to British custody.

Britain had offered to incarcerate Taylor in its prison system and cover the cost of his imprisonment if he was convicted, according to the Associated Press.
