House GOP: Administration Misled on Benghazi Attack

Tuesday, 23 Apr 2013 04:35 PM

House Republicans renewed their criticism of the Obama administration’s handling of last year’s terrorist attack on two U.S. compounds in Libya, saying officials “willfully perpetuated a deliberately misleading and incomplete narrative.”

In the days following the attacks, White House and senior State Department officials “altered accurate talking points drafted by the intelligence community in order to protect the State Department,” according to the Republicans’ interim report on the Sept. 11 Benghazi assault.

House Republican leaders said the findings “illustrate the need for continued examination and oversight by the five House committees.”

Republicans previously have criticized the administration for security shortcomings in Benghazi. Four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens, died at the compound, where security was “grossly inadequate,” according to an independent review panel appointed by then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

The State Department has been implementing a list of recommendations from the review panel.

The Benghazi attack was a flashpoint in the presidential election, and Republicans have criticized officials, such as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, for their early accounts of the circumstances.
