E.W. Jackson, the Republican candidate for lieutenant governor of Virginia, says in a 2008 book that practitioners of yoga are opening themselves up to Satan.

The National Reviewposted excerpts of Jackson's book, "Ten Commandments to an Extraordinary Life: Making Your Dreams Come True," as a sidebar to a profile of Jackson.

In the book, Jackson offers a heavy dose of life advice, including his take on the dangers of practicing yoga.

"When one hears the word meditation, it conjures an image of Maharishi Yoga talking about finding a mantra and striving for nirvana," Jackson wrote.

"The purpose of such meditation is to empty oneself . . . [Satan] is happy to invade the empty vacuum of your soul and possess it. That is why people serve Satan without ever knowing it or deciding to . . . Beware of systems of spirituality which tell you to empty yourself. You will end up filled with something you probably do not want."

More-recent statements from Jackson have turned an "old fashioned" preacher running for a secondary office into a controversial Internet media figure, National Review's Betsy Woodruff writes in her profile.

Some of Jackson's comments in the article included his view that gays are "frankly very sick," that President Barack Obama "clearly has Muslim sensibilities," and that African American voters must end their "slavish devotion to Democrats."

"If you say those things and you become the nominee of a major party, you get to be famous on the Internet. That’s how it works," Woodruff observed in her piece.
