Washington State Overestimates Obamacare Subsidies for 8,000

The cost of Obamacare health insurance for about 8,000 Washington residents will reportedly be a lot stiffer than they expected.

The Washington Health Benefit Exchange, which operates the state's online Healthplanfinder, said a major goof resulted in a miscalculation of tax credits to help enrollees pay for their insurance premiums, said a report Monday by The Seattle Times.

According to The Times, Healthplanfinder was submitting applicants' monthly income to the federal hub that compiles data from federal and state agencies to determine whether an applicant is eligible for Medicaid or for a premium subsidy to purchase a health plan through the exchange.

But the federal hub was expecting annual income, not monthly, which resulted in the miscalculation.

As a result, about 8,000 people were told they qualified for a higher tax credit than they actually qualified for based on their income and household size.

"We've asked ourselves [how that error could occur] many times," exchange CEO Richard Onizuka told The Times. "We are still trying to figure out how this happened."

Consulting firm Avalere Health estimated that fewer than 50,000 individuals have signed up for coverage on the exchanges of Washington and 11 other states, The Hill reported. The 8,000 individuals affected by the glitch in Washington state represent more than 15 percent of that total, The Hill said.

The problem is the latest in a string of glitches plaguing early enrollment in the Obamacare exchanges.

The federal website, HealthCare.gov, which processes applications for residents of the 38 states that do not run their own portals, is still reporting errors and glitches.
