WaPo: US Population Trending South and West

By    |   Monday, 12 Jan 2015 10:21 AM

Population is swelling in the West and South, predictable destinations for moves that were recently on the wane, The Washington Post reports of new nationwide trends.

The South saw the largest growth, rising 25 percent from 2013 to 2014 for a total of about 365,000 moves, but far off pace from 2004 to 2007 when the region saw record numbers of new residents, the Post said.

The West enjoyed its largest increase since 2008 with 103,000 moves in 2014, the Post noted.

Just six states saw no growth — Alaska, Connecticut, Illinois, New Mexico, Vermont and West Virginia— according to the Post, while 38 states saw only modest gains over 2013, according to census data.

"A smaller influx of immigrants was one reason for the more modest population growth," the Post wrote.

Immigrant population has shifted from predictable gateways like Florida, Texas and California to the Southeast and Pacific Northwest, Pew noted in a study released last month, adding that such influx has slowed population declines in "middle America."

Population shifts slowed in "recession-proof" areas like Washington, D.C., and North Dakota, where an oil boom in 2006 saw an explosion of job opportunities amid an economic drop elsewhere, the Post said.

Florida passed New York state in 2014 as the third most-populous state behind No. 1 California and No. 2 Texas, The Wall Street Journal said, outlining the possible future political ramifications of the population trend there.
