Montana Man Convicted in Exchange Student's Death

Wednesday, 17 Dec 2014 03:33 PM

A Montana jury has convicted a man of deliberate homicide in the shooting death of a German high school exchange student who trespassed inside the man's garage.

Markus Kaarma was found guilty Wednesday in the death of 17-year-old Diren Dede.

Kaarma's lawyers argued he acted in self-defense. Prosecutors maintained that after a previous burglary, Kaarma was intent on harming an intruder when he shot the unarmed teen April 27.

The incident attracted international attention and tested Montana's "stand your ground" law. That law allows the use of deadly force if a person has a reasonable fear for his or her life or property.

Kaarma faces a minimum penalty of 10 years in prison. His lawyers are promising to file an appeal.
