US Rep's Son Says He's 'Collateral Damage' in Bid to Get Dad

Sunday, 22 Mar 2015 01:30 PM

A veteran congressman's son awaiting trial in a bank fraud case says he's "collateral damage" in a Justice Department probe of his father.

Authorities believe Chaka Fattah Jr. misspent $200,000 in business loans along with funds from a federal education contract.

"Chip" Fattah is the son of U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah Sr., a 10-term Philadelphia Democrat.

Prosecutors say the son used the money for a lavish condo, luxury cars and casinos.

But the 32-year-old Fattah insists he's done nothing wrong.

He's persuaded a federal appeals court to delay the trial this month while it reviews the charges.

The younger Fattah's college roommate has pleaded guilty in the case. And two of his father's former aides have pleaded guilty in a probe circling around the congressman. Both Fattahs have called the investigations political.
