The son of U.S. Sen. Mark Udall was arrested on drug and trespassing charges, the sheriff's office in Boulder County, Colo., said Thursday.

Jedediah Fox-Udall, 26, was booked into Boulder County Jail Wednesday on suspicion of possession of drugs and four counts of trespassing, Cmdr. Heidi Prentup said. Deputies found him at about noon when responding to a call of a man breaking into cars in the semi-rural community of Eldorado Springs, where Sen. Udall lives.

They discovered heroin, a used syringe and a spoon in his pocket, according to the Boulder Daily Camera, and Fox-Udall admitted using heroin in the previous 48 hours, Prentup said.

Sen. Udall issued a statement  saying he and his wife Maggie are "are deeply distressed to learn of our son's arrest."

"We love our son and stand with him in his commitment to getting the treatment he needs'" added Udall, a Democrat who has represented Colorado in the Senate since 2009 after 10 years in the House. "We appreciate the private space to deal with this as a family."

Fox-Udall was released on $1,500 bond and is due to appear in court on Feb. 20.
