Twitter Proves Double-Edged Sword for Politicians

Twitter has provided great benefits for politicians such as Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann, allowing them to dispense their messages quickly and widely without going through the mainstream media. But it hasn’t gone well for everyone. And that’s raising fears among powerful tweeters in Washington about the risks they face on this hot new medium, the Hill reports.

In the latest example, Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., found himself in a controversy this week, saying he was hacked when a link to a photo of a man’s crotch appeared on his feed.

Others have hit pitfalls too. Not everyone likely enjoyed reading on Twitter about Missouri Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill’s weight as she hits her late 50s.

And Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, may have alienated some Twitter readers by jumping on followers who pointed out a spelling mistake.
