Donald Trump, the New York real estate mogul mulling a presidential run, wrote Jerry Seinfeld a blistering letter because the comic pulled out of a charity show to protest Trump’s questioning of President Barack Obama’s birthplace, the New York Post’s Page Six
Seinfeld says he doesn’t want to share billing with the billionaire developer and creator/host of "The Apprentice" TV show because Trump has called repeatedly for Obama to release his birth certificate.
The benefit, planned for September, is to benefit St. Jude’s Hospital for Research. The Eric Trump Foundation named for Trump’s third child is organizing it.
"I just learned you canceled a show for my son's charity because of the fact that I am being very aggressive with respect to President Obama, who is doing an absolutely terrible job as our leader," Trump wrote in a letter to Seinfeld, according to Page Six.
"We don't care that you broke your commitment even though the children of St. Jude are very disappointed, and despite the fact that your manager clearly stated you are 'truly a man of his word.'”
Trump, who ended the letter with the words “You should be ashamed of yourself,” even attacked Seinfeld for a TV show he appeared on last year.
"What I do feel badly about is that I agreed to do, and did, your failed show, 'The Marriage Ref,' even though I thought it was absolutely terrible . . . Despite its poor ratings, I didn't cancel on you like you canceled on my son and St. Jude. I only wish I did."
A rep for Seinfeld, who has a history of donating to Democrats, said the comedian “has grown increasingly uncomfortable” with Trump’s position on Obama’s birth, calling it “demagoguery” that has no place in public discourse. Seinfeld plans to give money both to the Eric Trump Foundation and to St. Jude, the rep said.
