Trayvon Martin's Parents Considers Running for Office

The parents of Trayvon Martin, the teenager whose shooting death helped spark the Black Lives Matter movement, are eyeing a possible bid for elected office — a move they say could eventually lead one of them to run for president.

In an interview with USA Today, the youth's father, Tracy Martin and mother, Sybrina Fulton, said they are not convinced much progress has been made on racial justice since their son was killed.

February will mark the five-year anniversary of Martin's shooting death by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, the Washington Examiner noted. A jury later found Zimmerman not guilty of second-degree murder.

The youth died in Sanford, Fla.

Now his parents say they worry President Donald Trump will make it easier for police and citizens to justifying violence against minorities on the grounds they feel their personal safety is at risk.

And because of that, Fulton and Martin told USA Today they are considering running for office. It is an idea they would have laughed at five years ago — "before our life got interrupted," as she put it, the newspaper said.

"Before I was just comfortable with my average life, but now I feel like I'm just obligated to be part of the change," Fulton said. "The only way we can be part of the change is if we start with local government and we work our way up."

They're setting their sights high.

"It could go all the way to the White House," she said. But she noted it would begin with a bid for city or county commission.

And Tracy Martin agreed.

"There's no limitations," he said. "I think once you embark on a journey, you don't minimize your goal; you want to maximize your goals."
