Texas Governor Plans Stronger Action on Dissenting Sheriff

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott threatened Friday to take even tougher action against a county sheriff who has said she will not cooperate with federal immigration laws.

"No one, especially in law enforcement, gets to pick and choose which laws they will apply or abide by," Abbott told Fox News' "Fox and Friends" program regarding Travis County’s new Democratic sheriff, Sally Hernandez.

The new sheriff's refusal to enforce laws requiring cooperation with federal authorities has, in effect, created a sanctuary city situation in Austin.

"There are dangerous people she is letting out of jail, who are compromising the safety of the people of the state of Texas," said Abbott. "We're not going to tolerate it. We'll force the rule of law."

Abbott said he's already withheld money from the Travis County sheriff's office, and "we will hammer down even tougher penalties with bills we're working on, as we speak.

"I already withheld money from the Travis county sheriff's office because of what they have done. We'll hammer down even tougher penalties with bills we're working on as we speak," Abbott said.

The governor also on Friday commented about President Donald Trump's Supreme Court choice, Judge Neil Gorsuch, calling him a "great pick" to replace the late Justice Antonin Scalia.

"I argued before the United States Supreme Court when I was attorney general of Texas," said Abbott. "I argued before Antonin Scalia. He was a masterful jurist. It was essential that Trump appoint someone who could follow in the footsteps of Justice Scalia. I think he picked the right guy to do that."

He also believes Gorsuch will be approved, despite Democratic opposition. President Donald Trump on Wednesday urged Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell Wednesday to 'go nuclear" and change the rules of the Senate if necessary to push through Gorsuch past a requirement that he get 60 votes.

"This is going to backfire on the Democrats," said Abbott. "One way or the other, this pick will be confirmed."

It's important to get a new justice, said Abbott, as "so many cases are not decided" because of the current 4-4 tie in the court.
