Texas Gov. Rick Perry, under fire for traveling to Europe amid the Ebola crisis, is canceling the last leg of the economic-development trip and returning to the Lone Star State after reports that a second Dallas nurse has been diagnosed with the disease.

The three-term Republican will personally convene meetings when he returns on Thursday, spokesman Felix Browne told Newsmax on Wednesday.

Perry, who is considering a run for the White House in 2016, came under attack by Texas Democrats and citizens groups after leaving this week for a trip that included stops in England, Germany, Poland, and Ukraine.

He spoke in London on Tuesday and was scheduled to travel to Poland and Ukraine before returning on Sunday.

Even President Barack Obama canceled a planned campaign trip to New Jersey and Connecticut on Wednesday to meet with top officials coordinating the Ebola response.

The turnabouts came amid reports that a second nurse at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital to contract the disease, Amber Vinson, traveled from Cleveland to Dallas the day before she was diagnosed.

The Ohio Health Department said it was tracing Vinson's contacts and was working with Frontier Airlines to locate additional people the nurse may have come into contact with, spokesman Jay Carey said.

In a statement release earlier Wednesday, Perry sought to reassure Texans that his administration was responding properly to the crisis.

"This is the first time that our nation has had to deal with a threat such as this," he said in a prepared statement from Europe. "Everyone working on this challenge — from the medical professionals at the bedside to the public health officials addressing containment of the infection — is working to end the threat posed by this disease.

"These individuals are keeping the health and safety of Texans and the needs of the patients as their most critical tasks," Perry added. "Every relevant agency at the local, state and national levels is working to support these individuals."

Browne told Newsmax that Perry's Task Force on Infectious Disease Preparedness and Response was also meeting Wednesday to discuss recommendations on how to better address the crisis.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
