Gay hotel owner Mati Weiderpass, who recently came under fire for meeting with Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, got kicked out of a bar after getting into a fight with some patrons over the matter.

Weiderpass and fellow OUT NYC owner Ian Reisner faced backlash in the gay community after it was learned that the two had met with Cruz in April to discuss foreign policy because the Texas senator is strongly opposed to gay marriage.

Weiderpass faced anger from patrons Sunday over the incident while at a Sip-n-Twirl at Fire Island Pines, which Weiderpass and Reisner have an 80 percent stake in, leading him to be kicked out by owner P.J. McAteer, the New York Post is reporting.

"One guy got up and asked him what the rationale was to have dinner with Cruz. They got kind of heated and before you knew it, there was a lot of people yelling," customer Evan Lobel told the Post.

McAteer then reportedly asked them to leave and said he would call the police if they didn't.

"Upon their departure, the crowd cheered,” Lobel posted on Facebook.

"This was strictly between P.J. and Mati," another source told the Post.

Weiderpass addressed the incident in a statement: "P.J. McAteer is condemning me for what he perceives as my thoughts and beliefs by asking me to leave a venue open to all. As small-minded as that is, I have been and will always be an advocate for LGBTQ issues."

Even though Weiderpass and Reisner apologized for the April meeting, calling it in "poor judgment" and a "terrible mistake" after facing criticism and threats of boycotts, Weiderpass blasted the "hateful, biased social media messages, and attacks from gay extremists" in an opinion piece he wrote for the New York Observer in May.

"It is amazing that my businesses are being boycotted by some because I hosted a discussion with an elected official. Not a fundraiser. Not an endorsement. A dialogue," he wrote.
