$38 Tablet to Debut in US in 2014

A $38 tablet computer is coming to the United States in 2014 in an effort by Datawind to get more schools and low-income communities onto the Internet.

"Affordability shouldn't be the reason people can't get on the Internet," said Suneet Singh Tuli, CEO of Datawind. "We want to specifically reach a customer base that right now is not on the Internet."

According to The Wall Street Journal, the three Datawind tablets that the London-based company will sell in the United States will start at $38 and top out at $149, depending on the specifications and capabilities of the device.

Datawind is able to keep its costs down by using outdated technology comparable to the first-generation iPad, released in 2010.

The $38 UbiSlate 7Ci tablet runs on Google's Android 4.0.4 operating system, comes with a one-gigahertz, single-core processor and just four gigabytes of storage. It has a seven-inch screen with a resolution of 800-by-480 pixels, which is not anywhere close to the screen qualities found on the latest Apple iPads, Amazon Kindle Fires or Google Nexus tablets.

But, Tuli argues, that's not the point.

"The power of the Internet is frankly essential in taking societies to the next level, in equipping young people to be able to even make it in the workforce," he said. "We can't afford to have people who grow up without the Internet."

The $38 Datawind tablet is currently available on the company's website and will be available in U.S. stores after the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January.
