Subway Cars Derail in Manhattan; More Than 400 Evacuate

NEW YORK -- Two subway cars derailed Sunday in Manhattan, forcing more than 400 passengers to leave the tunnel on a second train, officials said.

The cars on a train heading from Queens to Brooklyn via Manhattan jumped the tracks around 4:20 p.m. near Central Park, said NYC Transit spokesman Charles Seaton.

The 449 passengers were removed from the tunnel on a "rescue train," officials said. One person suffered from anxiety and another person reported a minor injury, but neither required medical treatment, Seaton said.

The cause is under investigation. The train's operator and conductor will receive blood alcohol testing, Seaton said, standard procedure after an accident.

The derailment interrupted some train service.
