Polls: Southern Red States Support Gun Background Checks

By    |   Wednesday, 29 May 2013 11:38 PM

The percentages may be smaller, but Southern red states support expanded background checks for those wanting to buy guns, new polls show.

Public Policy Polling talked to voters in Arkansas, Tennessee and Georgia, finding 71 percent support in Georgia, 67 percent in Tennessee and 60 percent in Arkansas. Female voters were even more supportive: 81 percent in Georgia, 73 percent in Tennessee and 67 percent in Arkansas.

The Senate voted down a bill that would have expanded background checks earlier this year, and the polls say Southern senators have been hurt in the polls over those votes.

Democrats are more likely to support background checks, but support cuts across party lines, the pollsters said.

Georgia Democrats favor them by 82 percent, independents 67 percent and Republicans 63 percent. Tennessee Democrats favor them 88 percent, independents 61 percent and Republicans 53 percent.

In Arkansas, 85 percent of Democrats favor them, and 45 percent of both Republicans and independents do.

Sen. Mark Pryor, D-Ark. would have a better chance at re-election if he reversed his stance and voted for background checks if they come up for another Senate vote. Forty percent of voters say they'd be more likely to vote for him if he did.

Republican senators are feeling the wrath of their constituents over their no-votes. Forty-four percent said they'd be less likely to vote for Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., 41 percent would be less likely to vote for Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., 47 percent said they'd be less likely to voter for Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., and 38 percent would be less likely to voter for Sen. John Boozman, R-Ark.
