The California street artist who became famous for his stencil drawing of President Barack Obama during his 2008 campaign has been arrested on charges that he vandalized more than a dozen buildings in Detroit, the New York Daily News reports.

Shepard Fairey, 45, faces up to five years in prison and thousands of dollars in fines if convicted.

Customs agents at Los Angeles International Airport discovered a warrant for Fairey's arrest on Monday while he was traveling from Europe.

According to the Daily News, Fairey was in the Motor City doing some work, including building a 184-foot mural on the Compuware building, but he allegedly "completed some unauthorized work as well, including street art at a water tower and several buildings and freeway underpasses."

Detroit police say Fairey put up posters on private and government property, causing significant property damage, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Fairey's lawyer is reportedly talking with officials in Detroit to make arrangements for the artist to turn himself in.

Fairey's Hope poster became one of the most widely recognized symbols of Obama's campaign. Following Obama's election the Smithsonian Institution acquired the poster for its National Portrait Gallery.
