A new study has shattered the belief that America's young people are having a lot of sex — concluding they are actually the least promiscuous generation in the past century.

Among the findings by Archives of Sexual Behavior, a respected medical journal:
  • The number of sexually inactive young adults has more than doubled over 30 years
  • In young women, sexual inactivity tripled, from 5 to 16 percent
  • In young men, it nearly doubled, from 8 to 14 percent.
  • Fifteen percent of young people, aged 20 to 24, have not had sex since age 18
  • The only other generation showing a higher rate of sexual inactivity were was born in the 1920s.
"For a long time we've known that young adults are taking longer to get married, have kids, buy houses, have a stable job — all those so-called adult milestones are happening later. Being 20 to 24 is not what it used to be," the report's lead author Jean Twenge told The Washington Post.

"It used to be that a lot of them, especially women, were married at that time, or were living with someone and were living independently of their parents. Twenty-year-olds are like what 16-year-olds used to be."

The study used information gathered by the General Social Survey, a U.S. study that surveyed 27,000 respondents of all ages.

"This study really contradicts the widespread notion that Millennials are the 'hookup' generation, which is popularized by dating apps like Tinder and others, suggesting that they are just looking for quick relationships and frequent casual sex," Dr. Ryne Sherman, who co-wrote the study, told The Telegraph.
