Dem Sen. Walsh's Master's Degree Revoked Over Plagiarism

The Army War College has revoked Montana Democratic Sen. John Walsh's master’s degree for plagiarizing portions of a paper while enrolled as a student.

"Though I disagree with the findings made by the War College, I accept its decision with great humility and respect for the U.S. military," Walsh, a decorated Iraq War veteran, said in a statement after the decision Friday.

"I apologize to all Montanans for the plagiarism in my 2007 paper, and I am prepared to live with its consequences. I may not be a scholar but I am proud to have been a soldier who has served Montana and this great nation for 33 years in uniform."

After The New York Times published a story in August showing Walsh lifted information without crediting the sources for a paper he wrote in 2007, the senator dropped his campaign for re-election.

Walsh said the unattributed use of source material was an "unintentional mistake," the Great Falls Tribune notes.

After returning home from a deployment in Iraq, Walsh sought treatment for symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, the newspaper reports. Walsh said he was undergoing treatment while working on the research project, though noting he wasn't blaming PTSD for his mistake.

On Friday, Walsh vowed to "continue proudly serving this state through the end of this term."

Walsh was appointed to his Senate seat in February when Max Baucus resigned to become ambassador to China.

Montana Democrats chose state lawmaker Amanda Curtis to replace him as their candidate against Republican Rep. Steve Daines, who had been leading in the polls even before the plagiarism scandal scotched Walsh's campaign.

The Nov. 4 election is being closely watched, with the GOP in need of a net gain of six seats to take Senate control; the Montana senate seat has been in Democratic hands for more than a century.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
