Oscar Viewers Tweet Outrage at Sean Penn's Green Card 'Joke'

Uber liberal actor and activist Sean Penn set off a firestorm of controversy at Sunday’s Academy Awards when he made what many are calling a racist joke about the Mexican director of the film "Birdman."

"Who gave this son of a b***h a green card?" Penn joked before announcing "Birdman," directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, had won in the best picture category.

Twitter lit up immediately, with both celebs and the general public taking Penn to task for his remark.

Actor Mario Lopez, who is Mexican, found it offensive that Penn saved the green card joke for the Latino.

Iñárritu, apparently, was not offended by Penn’s joke. He and Penn are friends, he said backstage, and have a history of making inappropriate jokes with each other.

"I found it hilarious," he said, the New York Daily News reported. "You know, Sean and I have that kind of brutal relation where only true friendship can survive.

"When I was directing him in '21 Grams,' he was always making jokes about that, and I make on him a lot of very tough jokes that I will not tell you. Anyway, we have that kind of relation, of old friendship. I didn’t find it offensive. I think it was very funny, in my personal view."

Penn’s politics have long been a touchstone for controversy. He angered many Americans when he repeatedly lauded late Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez and, during a visit to the country, criticized President George W. Bush’s policies towards Chavez.

Penn also accused the American media of telling "lies" about Chavez.
