Ferguson District Cancels School Due to Riot Threat

By    |   Friday, 21 Nov 2014 06:35 PM

A Ferguson, Missouri school district has canceled classes for Monday and Tuesday out of fear of riots, if the grand jury announces its decision on whether or not it will charge police officer Darren Wilson for the death of Michael Brown this weekend.

"With heightened anxiety and activity, we thought it would be better for students and staff to extend the holiday at his point," said Tiffany Anderson, Jennings School District superintendent, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting.

Anderson said that the decision was not a decision by law enforcement, however several St. Louis County school district representatives did recently meet with law enforcement officials to discuss options.

According to the superintendent, a large majority of Jennings' students walk to and from school and students were being approached by adults with fliers "encouraging students to be disruptive and encouraging them to think of police as pigs."

The Jennings School District includes part of Ferguson. The district had already scheduled to have schools closed Wednesday through Friday for the Thanksgiving holiday.

There are three other school districts that have schools in Ferguson — Hazelwood, Riverview Gardens, and Ferguson-Florissant — that are still planning to be open.
