Neb. Lawmakers Advance 30-Day Safe Haven Age Limit

LINCOLN, Neb. -- A 30-day age limit on children who can be dropped off at hospitals under Nebraska's Safe Haven Law has received first round approval from lawmakers.

The measure advanced by lawmakers Tuesday still faces two more votes. Gov. Dave Heineman has said he would support an age limit anywhere from 3 to 30 days.

The measure is designed to stop the wave of drop-offs of older children under the law, which is meant to protect infants. Nebraska's safe haven law is the only one in the country without an age limit and has led to the drop-off of 34 kids _ none of them infants.

Lawmakers also vow to address the lack of services for older, troubled youth.
