Ryan Not Ready for Talk of 2016 Presidential Race Yet

Paul Ryan, the defeated GOP vice presidential nominee, isn’t ready to talk about the 2016 presidential race yet, even though much of the political world assumes he will run.

“Oh gosh, we just finished a presidential election. I think everybody’s tired of talking about presidential politics. I am,” the House Budget Committee chairman told WISC TV in Madison, Wis., in an interview that aired Monday evening, Politico reports.

“Right now, I look at what I’ve just been re-elected to do, to represent Wisconsin, to be the chairman of the Budget Committee, to deal with these budget and fiscal and economic issues. “I’m going to throw myself back to that work because it’s work that needs to get done.”

Ryan was willing to analyze the defeat he and his running mate Mitt Romney suffered last week. “We thought this was going to be a very close race. We thought we had a good chance of winning,” he said. “I think the surprise was some of the turnout, especially in urban areas, which definitely gave President Obama the big margin to win this race.”

Many Republicans hoped Ryan could carry his home state for the ticket. But, “we always knew Wisconsin was an uphill fight,” he said. “Wisconsin hasn’t gone Republican since the Reagan ’84 landslide. Mitt didn’t pick me for Wisconsin, for a certain state. He picked me for issues, for governing, for taking on the debt crisis.”

As for the 2016 GOP presidential contest, other potential contenders include New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum.
