Rick Perry Critical of Successor's State Troops Decision

Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry has criticized his successor for dispatching state troops to keep an eye on a military training exercise that's been fueling fears of a sinister federal takeover plot.

"It’s OK to question your government. I do it on a regular basis. But the military is something else," Perry, a possible 2016 presidential candidate, told the Dallas Morning News Tuesday.

"Our military is quite trustworthy. The civilian leadership, you can always question that, but not the men and women in uniform."

Conspiracy theories about the operation have been circulating for weeks, including claims the military is preparing to declare martial law or confiscate weapons of law-abiding citizens.

Gov. Greg Abbott ordered the Texas State Guard to monitor the military exercises, expected to be held over several states from July 15 to Sept. 15, and defended it as necessary to protect civil liberties.

"I expect to receive regular updates on the progress and safety of the operation," Abbott wrote in a letter ordering the monitoring.

"Directing the State Guard to monitor the operation will allow Texas to be informed of the details of military personnel movements and training exercise schedules."

But the Pentagon insisted Monday there's nothing to fear from the operation, McClatchy reports.

Presidential candidate Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz told Bloomberg while he has "no reason" to doubt the military’s assurances, he's asking the Pentagon for more information.

But Texas Republican Rep. Mac Thornberry, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, dismissed the concerns, the Morning News reports.

"These are incredibly capable, patriotic Americans and the notion that they’re going to be some sort of private army for the president to take away all our guns is just silly," he told the Morning News.
