National Journal: Study Shows Elites Run Government

By    |   Friday, 19 Jul 2013 12:08 PM

The top 250 officials in the Obama administration’s second term form an elite group, many of them with Ivy League educations and liberal Democratic credentials, according to a study by the National Journal.

"They are a very elite group. Four out of 10 of the top 250 have Ivy League degrees. More graduated with some degree from Harvard than any other university in the world. There are more people with degrees from Oxford than any public school in the United States," Adam Kushner, the publication’s executive editor, said Friday on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program.

"Compounding the sort of elite sense of them is the fact that only 18 percent of them grew up in states that went red, voted for Mitt Romney," Kushner said.

He also noted that Texas, the second-most-populace state, has only four decision makers in the top 250, while there are 40 from New York.

Kushner also sees a gap between the education or family background of officials and everyday citizens.

"This accounts for such a disconnect, not only between America and Washington, D.C., but also between the people that are running our government understanding the concerns of middle-class America," he said.

Results of the study, which the magazine conducts every four years, can be found in latest issue.
