Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz., suggested that the U.S. border became so insecure under former President Barack Obama that nuclear weapons could be smuggled into the United States inside bales of marijuana, during an interview with CNN which quickly grew heated.

He also blamed the media for "overstating" what President Donald Trump's immigration policy entails.

"Well, part of the panic here is the media overstating and confusing some of the things that are actually happening here," Franks said to host Brianna Keilar. "If you look at what the Trump administration's actual policies are, I don't think the media is accurately portraying what the real situation is."

"The reality, Brianna, is that we have to measure all of the costs, ancillary and otherwise, and make the best decision that we can. But I can suggest to you that there are national security implications here for a porous border," Franks continued. "We sometimes used to make the point that if someone wanted to smuggle in a dangerous weapon, even a nuclear weapon, into America, how would they do it? And the suggestion was made, 'Well, we'll simply hide it in a bale of marijuana.'"

He went on to blame former Obama, saying he did not enforcing immigration laws and "just kind of stood by and let whatever would happen happen, that it endangered this country."

Keilar then challenged Franks, asserting that Obama "deported more people than [former President] George W. Bush."

According to data from the Department of Homeland Security analyzed by ABC News, Obama did deport more people than any previous president at 2.5 million between 2009 and 2015. The statistics for 2016 have yet to be released. Bush deported just over two million in his two terms.

"So now tell me that Barack Obama was more committed to border enforcement than Donald Trump," Franks replied, when Keilar quoted rough numbers.

"You tell me what you make of those numbers,' the CNN host said back. "You said he stood by, you said he stood by. I'm just telling you the numbers on deportations.

"I'm suggesting to you that Barack Obama border security was something that, in my judgement, was dangerous to this country," Franks said. "And I continue to stand by that."
