Report: Administration Rang Up $181.5B in 2014 Regulatory Costs

The Obama administration imposed $181.5 billion in regulatory costs last year, according to a new report.

"In 79,066 pages of regulation, Americans will feel higher energy bills, more expensive consumer goods, and fewer employment opportunities," the center-right policy group American Action Forum said in its report.

The report noted the year was highlighted by EPA’s proposed "Clean Power Plan" (CPP), which the Obama administration conceded cost $8.8 billion and raised electricity prices by more than 6 percent by 2020.

But the policy group said EPA’s proposed ozone rule that imposes stricter limits could impose $15 billion in costs, the report says.

Obamacare was among the most expensive, with its provision requiring calorie labels on all restaurant menus and vending machines, the report finds, carrying a a $1.6 billion price tag for compliance costs.

The report also says, however, regulators noted $143 billion in benefits last year, $13.5 billion coming from the Department of Energy and $122 billion coming from the Environmental Protection Agency.

The study came under immediate fire from the Coalition for Sensible Safeguards, which claimed it exaggerates the regulatory costs and ignores the benefits of the proposed and final rules, The Hill reports.

"Just look at the White House’s new Clean Power Plan to see why it’s wrong to ignore the benefits of safeguards," the coalition said, The Hill reports.

"Cleaning up our nation’s power plants would cost less than $9 billion, but could yield more than $90 billion in future health and environmental benefits — preventing more than 6,000 premature deaths and as many as 150,000 asthma attacks annually."
