Ralph Peters: Obama Will Lose Either Way on Bergdahl Findings

By    |   Tuesday, 14 Oct 2014 11:21 PM

The Army has finished its investigation into why Sgt. Bowe Bergdhal walked away from his base in Afghanistan, but has yet to release the results.

Retired Lt. Col. Ralph Peters says those results are being held until after the Nov. 4 midterm elections to avoid political implications for President Barack Obama – and he says no matter what the results are, Obama loses.

Bergdahl was captured soon after leaving his base in 2009 and eventually ended up in the hands of the Taliban-affiliated Haqqani network. He was traded for five al-Qaida prisoners being held by the United States at Guantanamo Bay earlier this year.

Members of Bergdahl's unit have criticized the trade, saying Bergdahl deserted his post. His family says he walked away from the post but was trying to help local people in the area.

But Peters said on Fox News Channel's "Hannity" on Tuesday that Obama looks bad regardless of what the Army found.

If the Pentagon found that Bergdahl didn't desert, members of the military, veterans and conservatives will say it was coerced by the Obama administration into whitewashing the truth, Peters said. If it find him guilty of desertion, it will make Obama look even worse for welcoming Bergdahl's parents to a Rose Garden ceremony to announce his release.

"Obama has dug himself into a very, very deep hole, and he can't stop digging," said Peters, who added that he thinks the current White House despises the military.

"They understand why Bergdahl would desert. They just don't understand why anybody would join the military," Peters said. "So, he fits their Oliver Stone view of warfare."
