A new poll shows embattled Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel opening a sizable lead against his runoff opponent, Jesus "Chuy" Garcia, Politico reported.

According to the latest survey by APC Research, taken on behalf of the Chicago Tribune from March 25-29, Emanuel is ahead 58 percent to 30 percent with 9 percent of likely voters saying they remained undecided ahead of the April 7 election.

A previous poll taken in early March showed Emanuel leading Garcia, a city commissioner, 51 percent to 37 percent, Politico said.

Voters are breaking for the two candidates along racial lines with whites supporting Emanuel 72 percent to 25 percent while Garcia is supported by Hispanic voters 52 percent to 36 percent.

Emanuel, with his big political name and deep funding, has run an ad campaign that has been effective against his challenger, Politico noted.

The former White House chief of staff for President Barack Obama and first-term mayor endured an embarrassing finish in the city's Feb. 24 election when he failed to secure a majority — even with plenty of help from powerful Democratic allies — and also some Republicans, around the country, Bloomberg said.

His task leading the Windy City is grim as its fiscal crisis worsens with sinking revenues and mounting bills, according to National Journal.

"Voters must realize we are facing the greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression," political expert Paul Green of  Roosevelt University told the Journal of the city's deep woes, which include $20 billion in unfunded pension liabilities. "If something doesn't happen, the city is beyond the abyss."

Garcia has been a fixture in the city's Latino politics for four decades, but the Journal noted his weaknesses, adding that he "has run a campaign long on general populist criticism of the incumbent, but short on credible ideas about what he would do differently."
