Journalists Organize Push for Union at Politico

Politico employees are organizing an effort to unionize the news outfit after a series of recent shake-ups at the Capitol Hill publication, The Washington Free Beacon reported.

Mike Elk, the Politico labor reporter and supporter of unions is leading the effort.

"As Chris Townsend would say at [United Electrical], we got a beachhead @politico & are moving inland as we are encoutering almost no opposition [sic]," Elk tweeted on Monday, according to the Free Beacon.

One source told the newspaper that management is not openly against the effort and that there is extensive interest in the newsroom where employees have complained about long working hours.

Organizers said the process could take roughly six months to a year to organize.

Politico has had a recent exodus of staffers under its new editor, Susan Glasser. Sources inside the publication have blamed the upheaval on Glasser's management style and her vision for the outlet, the Free Beacon said.

Elk, however, praised Glasser and said the unionization effort was unrelated to her management style.

"Susan Glasser is the best skipper in the business, this has nothing to do with her," he said, according to the Free Beacon. "I believe in working for a union, that's all this is about for me."

According to the Free Beacon, more than 40 members of the Politico staff left in 2014, and more have departed since the New Year, including five in the first ten days of January.

Specifically, Maggie Haberman and Alex Burns recently left for The New York Times while others have gone to The Washington Post, CNN, and The Wall Street Journal, the Free Beacon said.
