Rep. Pete King: Airline Threat Hoaxes Disrupt Economy

By    |   Monday, 25 May 2015 06:45 PM

Ten threats against airliners on Monday appear to have been hoaxes, but can still do damage to the U.S. economy, Rep. Pete King told CNN on Monday.

The threats come a week after a series of Islamic State (ISIS) Twitter chatter encouraging the use of hoaxes, and King said that though the airline threats haven't been tied to ISIS, they still can inflict damage.

One of the threats was against an Air France jetliner flying from Paris to New York that was escorted on the last leg of the flight by two American F-15 fighter jets.

In addition to economic damage and chaos caused, "they may want to see how we react to these hoaxes, and, again, that may factor into what they do in the future," King said.

King, who is chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, said investigators will look into when the calls came in and how fast the response was.

"All of this has to be looked at carefully, because it could be the terror threat of the near future," he said. "This can cause tremendous disruption, if we have a multitude of these hoaxes coming in, especially on a busy flying day such as Memorial Day."
