Rep. Perry: Obamacare Strips Americans of Privacy

By    |   Thursday, 18 Jul 2013 06:44 PM

The Affordable Care Act is stripping Americans of privacy by spreading their personal information over various federal agencies, according to Congressman Scott Perry.

"You’ve got to understand that five separate federal agencies will have your information, Perry, a Pennsylvania Republican, told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

Story continues below.

"They will know your Social Security number, they will know where you live, they will know your age, your address, your email address, all your financial records.

"They'll have your health history, your employment status, they will know whether you've ever had a DUI, and your legal status."

Perry, who is on the House Appropriations, Labor Relations, and Consumer Affairs Committees, said that in light of recent revelations involving the Internal Revenue Service’s targeting of conservative groups, "we are very concerned."

"There's somewhere close to a dozen people who are working in charge of running the data hub, but there's not one person so there will be no accountability," he said.

Perry added that when he recently questioned one of the people in charge of the data hub, he was less than satisfied with the answers.

"[This person] couldn't tell me where the records were going to be stored, he couldn't tell me about a company called Serco that is being contracted by the federal government to store records for us and review them," Perry said.

"This is a foreign company, by the way, under investigation for fraud. Yet he knew nothing about it and this is one of the people in charge of our data."

He was referring to the Serco Group, a British company that has been awarded a $1.2 billion contract to handle key elements of the Affordable Care Act.

In Britain, Serco is under investigation by the government for allegedly overbilling by "tens of millions of pounds" on a contract involving the monitoring of parolees and individuals released on bail.

"We're absolutely concerned. This is why Republicans, this is why conservatives, this is why Americans are concerned about Obamacare in general," Perry said.

"Because we know they're going to know too much about us and they're going to screw it up."
