Pentagon Says Bergdahl Report Still Under Review

A report on Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl that includes a recommendation on whether he should be punished for leaving his post in Afghanistan is still under review, Fox News reports.

"As you know, in this building that can sometimes take a while, especially for major investigations like this," Pentagon press secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby told Fox News.

The review by Army Maj. Gen. Kenneth Dahl was completed in early October, but is yet to be released. Kirby said it is not purposely being delayed.

Bergdahl walked away from this post in Afghanistan in 2009 and was captured by a group affiliated with the Taliban. They held him captive until earlier this year, when he was traded for five detainees in the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

That trade sparked controversy from Capitol Hill and from some of Bergdahl's own platoon mates, who said he was a traitor. Republicans, including Sen. John McCain, said the White House was wrong to trade one soldier who had purposely walked away from his post for five high-value members of al-Qaida.

Some speculated in October that the report was being held until after the November 4 midterms, but they came and went and the report still hasn't been made public.

Bergahl currently is working a desk job at Fort Sam Houston in Texas. He has not spoken to the media since his release five months ago.

Punishment for desertion could bring the death penalty, but is unlikely in Bergdahl's case, Fox News notes, since it would be politically tricky to execute a former prisoner of war.

He also could be given jail time or be force to give up back pay.
