Traffic accidents involving numerous tractor trailers, cars, and other vehicles blocked the Pennsylvania Turnpike just northwest of Philadelphia, causing a dozen injuries Friday morning.

Up to 100 cars and trucks were involved in two massive pileups, according to some reports.

The crashes were reported just after 8 a.m. Friday, one day after the area got about a foot of snow that left roads slick.

Although the roadway was cleared of snow, surfaces were still icy in the area of the crashes, The Morning Call of Allentown, Pa., reported. The pileups occurred just hours after storm-related speed restrictions on the toll road were lifted around 6 a.m.

Authorities said more than a dozen people were injured.

Abington Memorial Hospital spokeswoman Cindy Taing said the hospital received 16 patients, including five trauma patients. She says no one has life-threatening injuries.

Television news helicopter footage showed several tractor-trailers and dozens of cars involved in a series of accidents that had backed up traffic for miles between the Bensalem and Willow Grove exits.

David Hill, 27, was about a mile back and had turned his car off to save gas. Given the nearest exit was about 2½ miles away, he anticipated being there for hours.

"There's no possible way," he said. "I'm stuck."

Hill, who works for a wealth management company, said he wasn't surprised there was an accident.

"I got on the turnpike and it was nothing but ice," he said. "I was very surprised at the condition of it. Normally the turnpike is one of the first roads that's cleared, but today I was driving on solid ice."
