Pediatricians Give Capitol Hill an Rx for Gun Violence: Stricter Laws

By    |   Monday, 13 May 2013 03:21 PM

More than 100 pediatricians have visited Washington this month to lobby Congress for stricter gun control laws, NBC News reports.

The effort by the American Academy of Pediatrics, which represents more than 60,000 physicians, is pressing for bans on assault weapons, mandatory background checks, waiting periods on all gun purchases, and restrictions on high-capacity magazines.

"We have to have a collectively louder voice," Danielle Laraque, chairwoman of the pediatrics department at Maimonides Infants and Children's Hospital in Brooklyn, told NBC News.

"What we need is a call to action, to really look at how we can change public policy that is not affected by data."

The move by the doctors comes after the National Rifle Association sponsored legislation in several states that would prevent pediatricians from asking parents about guns in the home.
