OSHA to Tackle Issue of Transgender Bathrooms in the Workplace

By    |   Tuesday, 05 May 2015 06:07 PM

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is taking on the issue of transgender people, and will help provide bathroom access to transgender workers in America.

According to an OSHA announcement,
the department has partnered with the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE). Both organizations "recognize the value of establishing a collaborative relationship to foster safer and more healthful American workplaces," according to the announcement.

"Through the Alliance, the organizations will help identify areas of emphasis for Alliance awareness, outreach, and communication activities," the announcement reads. "The Alliance will also explore and implement selected options to evaluate the effectiveness of the Alliance and measure the impact of its overall effort on improving workplace safety for employers and workers. In developing this Alliance, OSHA and NCTE recognize that OSHA's State Plan and On-site Consultation Project partners are an integral part of the OSHA national effort, and that information about the products and activities of the Alliance may be shared with these partners for the advancement of common goals."

More specifically, the partnership will require a review of the current OSHA bulletins that are plastered in offices across America, and they will be updated accordingly to reflect transgender bathroom access.

The agreement will also see a quarterly information bulletin sent out that addresses transgender issues as they relate to the workplace.

"Through this alliance, we will jointly work with the NCTE to develop products and guidance materials to improve workplace safety and health for all workers," Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health Dr. David Michaels said in a press release.

Transgender issues have been in the news recently after former Olympian Bruce Jenner announced he is transgender and is undergoing treatment to become a woman.

During an interview
with ABC's Diane Sawyer in which he said he is transgender, Jenner also said he is a Republican.

"Is that a bad thing?" Jenner said. "I believe in the Constitution."

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, a Republican, commented on Jenner's situation by saying, "If he says he's a woman, then he's a woman."

Santorum later clarified his remarks,
saying his "empathy" for Jenner was "not a change in public policy."
