HHS on Obamacare: Almost 500K Enroll in First Week

By    |   Wednesday, 26 Nov 2014 05:16 PM

Almost 500,000 Americans signed up for an Obamacare health insurance plan through HealthCare.gov during the first week of the second open enrollment period, but challenges remain, says the Department of Health and Human Services.

The 462,000 people who chose healthcare plans on the federal exchange website include only people in the 37 states that do not have their own state-run exchanges, Nov. 15-21.

It's a sharp contrast to the first open-enrollment period that began in October 2013, which was wrought with computer glitches and only 106,000 enrolled in the entire first month when the online exchanges were first unveiled.

"We had a solid start, but we have a lot of work to do every day between now and Feb. 15," HHS Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell said Wednesday.

The Obama administration is still hoping to enroll 9.1 million people in an Obamacare plan through the federally ran website by the February deadline.

According to The Wall Street Journal, administration officials have said that while they are confident in the technical capabilities of HealthCare.gov and its ability to handle heavy traffic, they are still recommending that enrollees return to the exchange website to review their plans and make any needed changes.

Those who already have plans have until Dec. 15 to change their plans or their current plans will automatically be renewed.

According to HHS, almost half of those who selected an Obamacare healthcare plan were doing so for the first time, while 52 percent were renewing plans they chose during the first open enrollment period, which began on Oct. 1, 2013, and ended on March 31.

HealthCare.gov also had about 3.7 million unique visitors, and 1.6 million were window-shopping Obamacare plans.

In response to criticism that the Obama administration faced during the first open-enrollment period, that it was not releasing enough detailed information about the enrollment numbers, HHS says it will release "weekly snapshots of preliminary data" about HealthCare.gov enrollment numbers.
