Obama Gets Second Oval Office This Summer

Saturday, 02 Feb 2013 09:24 AM

President Barack Obama could be working out of a duplicate Oval Office by this summer while work on the real Oval Office and the West Wing gets under way.

The government is working on a new executive office for the president at the south end of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, reports Politico, while preparation begins for a major two-year renovation of the West Wing.

The substitute Oval Office is being created as a nearly identical replica of the real thing, and will be ready for Obama to move in by August if he is ready to make the move. The duplicate quarters build-out in the Eisenhower building has already begun, but there are already construction hurdles happening that may change the plans for the new Oval Office.

Obama could have to work out of the temporary quarters for as long as two years while the West Wing work is being done.

Other presidents have moved to temporary quarters in the past. Herbert Hoover relocated during repairs, and Presidents Richard Nixon and Lyndon B. Johnson mainly used offices across the street from the White House, using the Oval Office only for formal meetings.
