Report: NYPD Commissioner Bratton Forced his Deputy to Retire

Tuesday, 16 Sep 2014 01:13 PM

The president of the New York Police Department's Hispanic Society has slammed NYPD commissioner Bill Bratton for forcing his second in command, Rafael Pinero, to retire, according to the New York Post.

"What a way to start this month, by forcing out the top Hispanic police officer in the city," said Dennis Gonzalez, referring to Hispanic Heritage Month that started on Monday.

"We are saddened to hear that Deputy Commissioner Pineiro is leaving at the end of October after dedicating 45 years to service. We wish him the best in his future endeavors."

Pineiro, who had once set his sights on becoming commissioner, told his staff on Monday that he will be leaving on October 31 after 40 plus years with the department, according to the Post.

Pineiro had been a leading candidate to replace outgoing Commissioner Ray Kelly nine months ago, and even set up a secret meeting in Puerto Rico with then-Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio in November in his bid to win the job.

After he was elected, the mayor planned to keep Pineiro around because he's Hispanic, the Post reported, citing sources. But de Blasio eventually caved in to pressure from Bratton to dump Pineiro, the sources said.

The NYPD confirmed that Pineiro was retiring, but would not comment on the claims that he had been forced to leave.
