Don't blame President Donald Trump for the media's financial woes, a noted New York City journalist says.

"Financial woes pose a far greater threat to the news industry than anything Trump says or does. Journalism today is dying because no one has really figured out how to financially support it in a winner-take-all capitalist system," Ross Barkan writes in an opinion piece in Tuesday's Guardian newspaper.

"This is not to say that Trump isn't pernicious for further undermining what little trust people still have in news and lying so shamelessly, so often. He is a danger. But perspective is needed for those wailing that a tyrant will doom what's left of journalism in America. The truth is far more banal and depressing.

"There will be a media after Trump. If it's further crippled, it will have little to do with him, and everything to do with money. That's the only reality that counts."

Barkan covered politics for the New York Observer from 2013 to 2016, when he resigned because of owner Jared Kushner's family ties with Donald Trump.
