Lt. Comdr. Tim White, one of the two Navy officers carrying an unauthorized weapon at the time of the July 16 attack on the Navy Operational Support Center in Chattanooga, Tenn., will not face charges after firing his sidearm in defense, Military.com reports.

All military personnel, besides security forces, are prohibited by the Department of Defense to carry arms while on base unless they are in a combat zone. However, this ban is facing scrutiny after the July 16 rampage.

While the attack is still under investigation, four U.S. Marines and a sailor were killed when a gunman opened fire on military installations. The attack prompted calls, including from within Congress, for more troops to be armed inside the United States.

Following the attack, Defense Secretary Ash Carter gave the OK to allow more troops to be armed at facilities inside the U.S.

Carter said, "The tragic shooting on July 16 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, illustrates the continuing threat to [Department of Defense] personnel in the U.S. homeland posed by homegrown violent extremists."

According to Military.com, while charging White was "extremely unlikely," Democratic presidential contender Jim Webb tweeted that he shouldn't be indicted, but rather given a medal for his heroism:
