A retired Navy SEAL set a new world record for traveling in a wingsuit to raise $1 million to aid fallen comrades and their families on Veteran's Day.

Andy Stumpf, of San Diego, Calif., jumped from above 37,265 feet on Wednesday and traveled 18.257 miles in the wingsuit, Fox News reports. He flew at more than 140 mph.

The previous record was 17.83 miles, Fox reports.

Stumpf, an expert skydiver who retired from the Navy after 17 years as a lieutenant, performed the feat in honor of Jason Lewis, who was killed in Iraq in 2007, and to support the Navy SEAL Foundation's Survivor Support Program for 2016.

He also served as a SEAL operator with 10 tours of duty, Fox reports.

"I'm glad to have it done," Stumpf said after his flight, The Daily Mail reports. "The jump has proven to be the easy part; the fundraising is exponentially more difficult.

"The jumping aspect also allows me to draw people's attention, and then hopefully direct it towards the fundraising efforts, which is the only goal," he said.

Stumpf received a serious combat injury but underwent a rigorous rehabilitation regimen and later returned to active duty before eventually retiring, Fox reports.

His honors include five Bronze Stars, including four with valor; a Purple Heart; Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps commendation medals, and a Presidential Unit Citation.
